The Cook Islands could be set to change their name as they look to lose the reference from the British explorer Captain James Cook.

They would change the country's name in favour of something that reflects their 'Polynesian nature' and heritage.

Mark Brown, the deputy prime minister of the Cook Islands, said he was supportive of changing to something more Polynesian, but it would need to involve the country's 12,000 residents. In 1994, the island nation held a referendum to change the name to Avaiki Nui but the proposal was resoundingly defeated.
