"Kuputupu" is the new board game based on the popular word game called Scrabble. It has been developed by Hutt Valley library to increase the use of Te Reo Māori. Kapai Poneke this is amazing.
It's just like normal scrabble except you only score points from words in the Māori language. The game was made last year for a festival called Beyond the Page which celebrates different ways of storytelling.
Their aim is to work closely alongside the largely Māori populated community and this was an awesome addition to the community. The idea was sold to the divisional manager of the Lower Hutt Hub, he was extremely impressed, said he'd fund it and wuuulaaaa the rest is history.
The first 100 games that were made have been sold and the waiting list is growing rapidly! They aren't interested in making a profit, "It's all about sharing Te Reo and making it accessible. Not all of us here have much knowledge of the Māori language but when you play the game, people don't realise how much Te Reo knowledge they actually have."
We know what we'll be asking Santa for this year!
