Snoop Dogg has been a rapper, actor, producer, video-game character, Bollywood soundtrack contributor, NFT enthusiast, and a reggae singer in his 51 years, and now it seems he will be adding Producer to the list!
Universal Pictures just announced that it is "developing the definitive biopic" of the 51-year-old "entertainment industry mogul and icon of gangsta rap." The film will incorporate music from Snoop's 30-year career, during which he has received 17 Grammy nominations.
Joe Robert Cole, who co-wrote the MCU films Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with Ryan Coogler, will write the screenplay, while filmmaker Allen Hughes (Dear Mama, HBO's The Defiant Ones) is set to direct the movie.
Snoop will also be producing the film, “I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind,” he said in a statement.
“It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.”
The movie will make for the first film from Snoop's new production company Death Row Pictures, born from record label Death Row Records, which the rapper purchased in February.
Universal has had previous success in producing musical biopics focusing on key artists. In 2015, it released Straight Outta Compton, focusing on the West Coast hip-hop scene and N.W.A. In 2002 they released 8 Mile, which told the thinly-veiled autobiographical story of Eminem and his rise into an industry and genre dominated by Black artists.
There's no dates for when this is set to be released but as always, once we get an official release date and platform you can stream it on Aotearoa, we will let you know!
