Over the weekend, Disney dropped the trailer for their upcoming live action Little Mermaid film and BOY did it set off the internet!
The most important thing to come out of it though, is this twitter thread.
Potentially the sweetest thread of all time, parents have been filming their young Black daughters watching the new trailer of The Little Mermaid and seeing their reactions as Halle Bailey emerges as the first Black Ariel!
As I stroll on TikTok, I keep seeing parents video their children reacting to The Little Mermaid trailer. So instead of focusing so much on the negative, I thought I’d show a thread of the little black kids who are excited to see their favorite princess look like them.

One video in the thread, originally from TikTok, was captioned “when your favourite Disney princess looks like you" and shows the 3-year old sitting up once Ariel is onscreen.
Another video of two sisters, shows their mouths drop open with smiles when they notice Ariel.
This girl!!
The thread is FULL of videos like these, guaranteed to melt your heart!
The announcement in 2019 that Halle Bailey would be playing Ariel, was met with lots of racist backlash as people argued that Ariel was white. (She is also a mermaid, which to our knowledge don't exist.. but anyways)
Jodi Benson, who voiced Ariel in the original 1989 animated film, has consistently shown her support for Bailey this whole time.
The film is expected to be released in theatres, May 2023.
