The Black Ferns Sevens Claim the Gold in Thrilling Match Against Canada
The Black Fern Sevens have successfully defended their title, emerging victorious in a gripping gold medal match against Canada. Despite facing fierce resistance, they secured a 19-12 win after trailing 12-7 at halftime.
A pivotal moment came when a yellow card was issued to Woodman-Wickliffe for a head clash in a tackle, allowing Canada to capitalize and score just before halftime. However, the Black Ferns demonstrated remarkable composure in the second half, scoring two tries to Canada's one.
Co-captain Sarah Hirini made a crucial break, setting up Waaka for a decisive try in the corner, sealing the victory. "To be honest, I'm bloody sore, my face hurts, but I'm so happy," Hirini shared post-match. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to the supporters, saying, "We feel you, we hear you, we see you - this one’s for you guys. We're bringing that gold medal back to Aotearoa, let's go!”
The Black Ferns showcased dominant form throughout the tournament, winning all their previous matches by more than 26 points. In the semifinal, they overcame an early deficit to defeat the US 24-12.
This victory marks the Black Fern Sevens as the first women's rugby team to win back-to-back Gold medals. Hirini, Woodman-Wickliffe, Theresa Setefano, and Tyla King join an exclusive club of athletes with three medals, including two golds.
